Radiocarbon dating services & Lab

Welcome to the homepage of Radio carbon (14) dating services of Radioanalytical lab of the Marzeev Institute of Hygiene and Medical Ecology located at Kiev, Ukraine. 02094, 50 Popudrenko, Kiev, Ukraine.
It is fully-equipped laboratory, specializing in conventional 14C analyses. Lab that do C14 dating.
(Responsible person – Michael Buzinny, tel./fax. 380 44 513-70-74 )

14C dating is performed in our lab using modern conventional (LSC based) method since 1993. For all LS measurements we use LS spectrometer Quantulus 1220TM, produced by PerkinElmer (formerly Wallac Oy). Teflon vials shaped 7 ml, 3 ml, 0,8 ml allow optimize LS counting performance for benzene samples of different mass. We have performed hundreds of carbon-14 analyses for our researches and some for commercial purposes.

We would like to discuss a radiocarbon concerned projects and other radioisotope researches especially from early stage of planning. Please send your inquiry or any ideas to Dr. Michael Buzinny. Information on sample's submitted sizes required, you could find below.

Our price corresponds to required time and precision, what kind of sample will be dated, corresponds to sample's size. Multi-sample discounts are offered for batches of submitted samples for conventional radiocarbon dating. Please send your inquiry to Dr. Michael Buzinny.

RADIOCARBON DATING

Typical amounts of carbon containing material types required for radiocarbon dating analyses.

How much material is necessary for Carbon analyses
Material Small sample Routine High Precision
Wood 5-8 g 20-30 g >150 g
Charcoal 2-3 g 5-20 g >40 g
Peat 15-20 g 50-60 g >300 g
Bone 50 g 150 g >700 g
Humus & Soil 100 g 300 g >1500 g
Shell(Carbonate) 15-20 g 35-40 g >150 g
Pottery Eestimation required Estimation required Estimation required
All of the above are Minimum Dry weights required. Other carbon materials can be considered for 14C analyses after consultation with Dr. Michael G. Buzinny.

Please inform us about your planes for carbon dating in our lab prior to sample submission. We have some additional advices for sample(s) submission and try to produce services in short period for your convenience.

All samples, to be analysed, should be clean, dry, bagged, and labeled Sample submission form & details, should be filled out printed, and posted with the sample(s). To help all users maximise the effectiveness of their carbon-14 analyses and to discuss sampling strategies and/or interpretation of any results we are pleased to any direct contact.

Pottery, ceramics & Radiocarbon (C-14) Dating (Novel)

Modern possibilities for carbon dating are now good tested for pottery and ceramic samples based on sufficient amount of carbon required for analyses.
Carbon residues, sufficient amount of datable carbon in sample was added to ceramic and pottery while production or while use - food preparation, etc.) allows application of such materials for 14C dating i.e. by application of direct pyrolysis procedures for benzene preparation for conventional analyses based on LSC.

How much? - Sample's Rate:

Radiocarbon dating C-14 sample prices and cost:
( Sample costs for a carbon 14 analysis )

Base price for C-14 dating is 100 Euro per sample (03/01/2009)

#1: Routine One (separate) charcoal sample (5-10 g of Carbon or more) coming abroad costs: 100 Euro + 10 Euro for Customs formalities. When 10 similar samples - cost is 1000-10%Discount+10 Euro for Customs formalities all equals 910 Euro.

#2: Routine One (separate) charcoal sample containing (0.5-3.0 g of Carbon) coming abroad costs:150 Euro+10 Euro for Customs formalities. When 10 similar samples cost is 1500-10%Discount+10 Euro for Customs formalities all equals 1360 Euro.

When Sample's rate is not equal to 1,0 - for all cases, the base price should be multiplied to corresponding Sample's rate.

When High Precision - for both cases, the base price should be multiplied to 1.5.

Atention!

About submission:

All samples which must pass through Customs should be clearly labeled:

"SCIENTIFIC SAMPLES - NO COMMERCIAL VALUE".
Do not claim a total value of more than US$10.

We recommend your commercial courier for your samples to be sent by
(PLEASE ask us details BEFORE of your samples SENDING).

For Europe it is recommended conventional mail.

Few words about how is C14 used for dating the past?

What is carbon dating used for?

14C is the radioactive isotope of the common element carbon (C). It is generally formed in the upper atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with nitrogen gas (N2). The radio-carbon is oxidised to C-dioxide (or CO2) and is instantantly mixed throughout the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide is used as the basis for photosynthesis, the radiocarbon is integrated into all living things. As far as plant or animal dies, the C-14 decays.

It is known that half-life of 14C is 5730 years. At analytical laboratory could be measured the amount of remaining 14C relative to the stable C one which don’t change in concentration. Back-calculation to the time of death could be done using the known carbon-14 half-life.

Radiocarbon content in the earth atmosphere is varying in time due to past changes in the strength of the earth’s magnetic field, the strength of the sun and changes in the C-cycle. It cause that determined carbon age does not equal to calendar one. Therefore radiocarbon age should be converted to calendar age using one of several available software packages Groningen, CALIB 4, OxCal, CalPal.
